sous le cerisier. under the cherry tree.

***

In the sun, under the small cherry tree, sits a chair. I can hear a few birds chirping, a boy laughing, people talking too far for me to understand what they say. A fleeting moment.

wall art.

In an ordinary street, on a derelict wall, by a simple house... the happy surprise of a bouquet of paper flowers.

lectures à l'abbaye. readings at the abbey.

***

What's not to love about a festival that combines two of my passions, literature, and being out there taking in the beauty of our surroundings, whether they be natural or man-made.

The concept is to go to a certain place, local, historical often, and to be read an excerpt of a novel, an essay, a piece of writing, by an actor or an actress. I love this.

So, on June 1st, I went to the Bec Abbey in Le Bec-Hellouin, and was read successively two extracts from The Bible, and a chapter from The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

And then, I walked around in the afternoon sun and enjoyed the garden of the abbey.

I found those little words scattered on the walls of the tower really fascinating. How amazing indeed to write with stones!

Rouen. monter au beffroi. up the belfry.

Collines, montagnes, beffrois, tours, cathédrales, gratte-ciels, promontoires...

***

I love all opportunity to raise above... above the ordinary points of view, and to see things from up high.

Whether it is on a cliff overlooking the sea, a hill or a mountain, a countryside promontory, or a tower, a belfry, a church, a sky-scraper... I understand the world, its natural geography, and its people's lives better when I can observe them from above.

I seize every chance I get. As I did that day when we were touring Rouen with our visiting friend, Emily. We went into the Museum of the Gros-Horloge. From there, we can discover the heart of the city, cobblestone streets, timbered houses, slates on the roofs, church towers and the cathedral. Even the surrounding hills in the background.

It was bliss, going up the belfry, at every floor.

Loved the fun intriguing ancient maps on the walls.

Found lovely natural filters for my photos, in the stained-glass windows.

And finally, after the steep climb, marvelled at the view from up there. In every direction, a new outllook on our familiar city: hidden terraces and rooftops, the skyline of the Palais de Justice, the different point of view on the monuments we know so well we sometimes don't see anymore when we walk nearby...

beau linge. lace & linen.

I spent a delightful afternoon with my American friends Nancy and Tom, who are traveling in these hereabouts, visiting the Château de Martainville, which I know fairly well but never tire of. I love how harmonious it looks on the outside, and how peaceful it is inside.

My favorite room is probably the one dedicated to linen and needlework. The books of samples, the woodblocks for textile printing, the delicate pieces of lace or embroidery.

Such a ravishment for the eye, and such a reminder that there is beauty and creativity to be found and made in every day life, in every day objects.

9 mai 2013

matin à la campagne. one morning in the countryside. sweet.

That holiday, I spent at my friend's. My sister-like friend.

We have known each other for years, and have since then been having a never-ending conversation. May it last much longer - as long as possible.

After breakfast - an early one, but that lingered long and happy as her children came, sat down to eat, and went away, as we chatted and enjoyed the leisurely pace of the day - I strolled in the garden, camera in hand, and enjoyed the rare sun.

How soft is Normandy when the apple trees are blooming. We walked in the midst of orchards covered in white, along the river Seine, and just enjoyed being.

balade. a walk in the woods.

Lovely walk in the woods, the three of us. Water all around, from the winter rains, and delicate green leaves and moss.

neige & glace. icy landscape.
